[People News] Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers has been exposed for having a close relationship with deceased sex offender billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. After the U.S. Congress released relevant Epstein files last week, Summers was revealed to have repeatedly sought Epstein’s advice on how to pursue Chinese economist Jin Keyu. Jin’s father is former CCP Finance Minister Jin Liqun.

According to a BBC report, on November 19 Summers resigned from the OpenAI board of directors. Subsequently, Harvard University also issued a public statement announcing an investigation into Summers’ relationship with Epstein.

The Associated Press reported that Summers issued a statement on Monday (November 17), saying: “There are many regrets in my life, and befriending Epstein was a major lapse in judgment.” He said he felt “deep shame” about his relationship with Epstein and announced that he would withdraw from all public activities.

Summers added that he would “rebuild trust and repair relationships with those closest to me,” and that he was “willing to take full responsibility” for the mistake of continuing to stay in contact with Epstein.

Last week, when the U.S. Congress released additional Epstein files, some emails revealed that Summers had close interactions with Epstein. Not only did he frequently meet and correspond with Epstein, but he also repeatedly sought Epstein’s guidance on how to pursue a female economics student from Beijing.

According to a November 17 report by The Harvard Crimson, among the 20,000 Epstein documents released by Republican congressmen on the 12th, the close relationship between former Clinton-era Treasury Secretary and former president of Harvard University, Summers, and Epstein was exposed. The documents detail text messages and emails exchanged between the two from November 2018 to July 5, 2019. They remained in contact until the day before Epstein was arrested on July 6.

According to the reports, the woman is Jin Keyu. Jin Keyu, 43, is the daughter of former CCP Finance Minister and economist Jin Liqun. She studied at Harvard University from 2000 to 2009, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in economics, and later became a tenured professor at the London School of Economics.

Summers and Jin Keyu appear to have met at an academic conference. Summers updated Epstein for two consecutive days on his interactions with her. He wrote that he felt he should “cut off” contact with Jin Keyu, but the next day he praised her highly, saying she performed very well at the conference—smart, confident, and beautiful—joking, “I’m done for.”

From subsequent correspondence, it is inferred that Summers later said he believed he would not develop any relationship with Jin Keyu other than as an “economic mentor.” He had also forwarded to Epstein emails Jin Keyu sent him—which asked him to comment on her academic papers. Summers joked to Epstein that he should probably not reply to her for the time being. Epstein responded, “She sounds like she’s beginning to rely on you.”

In the next seven months of communication, Summers and Epstein occasionally used the code name “peril” to refer to Jin Keyu. In one instance, Summers forwarded to Epstein an email from her in which she thanked him for his support for her and her father.

Summers explained to Epstein in an email that during their most recent meeting he had flattered her father, and added that other CCP officials did the same.

In March 2019, Summers mentioned in a message, sounding discouraged, that Jin Keyu seemed to be interested in another man. However, the two continued to stay in contact because Jin valued Summers’ professional network.

By mid-June that year, messages showed that the situation between Summers and Jin Keyu still had not been resolved. Epstein replied in a text message: “She’s destined to follow you!”

Summers, now 70, has been married to his second wife, American writer and scholar Elisa New, since 2005.

Due to the fallout from the Epstein scandal, Summers has stepped down from a number of public positions, including board roles at the Center for Global Development, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Yale University’s Budget Lab, and the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project.

Reports say that Jin Keyu has declined to comment on the months-long email exchanges. In the Epstein emails released by the House, she did not mention having a romantic relationship with Summers.

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges related to soliciting minors for prostitution and served time in a Florida jail; he was also registered as a sex offender. In 2019, Epstein was federally charged with trafficking minors for sex. However, he died by suicide while awaiting trial, though many believe his death was not straightforward.
