[People News] Leaders of the European Union and Ukraine welcomed President Donald Trump’s remarks at the United Nations, where he emphasized that Russia could face severe sanctions due to its ongoing violence in Ukraine.

According to Voice of America, Trump said on Tuesday (September 23) that the United States would impose harsh punishments on Russia for its war in Ukraine and urged Europe to join and support the effort.

“If Russia has no intention of ending the war through an agreement, the United States is fully prepared to impose a very tough round of powerful tariffs on Russia, and I believe this will quickly stop the bloodshed.”

Trump stated that Europe must unite in supporting this initiative for the tariff measures to be effective.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said she agreed with Trump’s “tough statements” on Russia.

“We are very optimistic about this, because these are the right things; yes, we should stop buying Russian energy; yes, Ukraine should win the war, and all the other statements he made today regarding Ukraine and Russia (are correct),” she told reporters in New York on Tuesday.

“These are very strong statements, and we’ve never heard them in this form before, so it’s really good that we’ve now reached consensus,” she said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who met with Trump on Tuesday shortly after his speech, welcomed the possibility of further U.S. sanctions on Russia and Europe potentially halting purchases of Russian oil.

“We support your ideas, and I want to discuss how to stop some European countries—how to stop them from buying Russian oil and gas,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy noted that he had spoken with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, whose country is one of the major importers of Russian oil.

“I think they need some alternatives, and they will support this idea,” Zelenskyy said, adding that he was not sure whether Hungary’s leader would be willing to take the same action.

Senior U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said Trump was right to speak bluntly about Europe and Russian oil.

“Donald Trump told our European friends, if you are allies, then let’s stop buying Russian oil and gas. How can I end the war when you are fueling the enemy’s economy?” Graham said in an interview with Fox News.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Trump’s “wonderful speech” at the UN and echoed the president’s remarks, saying: “Every country must resist the disaster of unchecked immigration and the false disaster of energy.”

In his speech, Trump criticized the United Nations, calling the organization “full of potential, but far from realizing it.”

“This is just empty talk, and empty talk won’t solve wars. The only way to solve war is through action,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, when asked about the president’s criticism of the UN, said: “The president’s words were blunt.”

Thune told Fox News: “He spoke the unvarnished truth. I think in all discussions relating to foreign policy and national security, he made it clear that he is restoring peace through strength.”

“He demonstrates strength in everything he does, and this UN speech was no exception. He pointed out some of the things he believes other countries are doing wrong. In many cases, issues that once plagued the U.S.—such as open borders, which he has ended—are now troubling Europe and other parts of the world.”

After his speech, in a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Trump told Guterres: “I may not agree with it, but I assure you, our country 100% supports the United Nations.” △
