Chinese Interns in Japan Struggle to Find Organs: The Inside Story of Rapid Transplantation Back to Wuhan

In 2006, Annie, the wife of a chief surgeon in Sujiatun, Shenyang, together with journalist Peter, accused the Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in Sujiatun District, Shenyang, Liaoning Province (commonly known as “Sujiatun Thrombosis Hospital”), of detaining Falun Gong practitioners, harvesting their organs while alive for sale, and cremating bodies. [People News] Recently, in the book "Encountering Japan" by Chinese media figure Xu Jingbo, one chapter recounts the story of Japanese doctors and a Chinese female intern, shedding light on some troubling issues.

Around 2017, a 24-year-old intern named Xiao Sun arrived in Japan to work at an electronics equipment manufacturing company. She developed severe allergies after taking medication for acne, which led to significant declines in her kidney and heart function.

In May 2019, the critically ill Xiao Sun was admitted to Tohoku Medical University Hospital, the largest hospital in Japan, for treatment. The hospital took her condition very seriously and formed a specialised medical team led by Professor Takami Yoshiyuki, a prominent expert in cardiovascular surgery. Professor Takami, who earned his doctorate from an American university, is well-known in the field of cardiac surgery.

After diagnosis, Xiao Sun was found to have giant cell myocarditis. In September of the same year, Professor Takami successfully performed an artificial heart installation surgery on her, allowing Xiao Sun to get out of bed and walk post-operation.

However, the only definitive treatment for her condition is a heart transplant, but Japan faces a shortage of heart resources, particularly when it comes to transplanting hearts from Japanese donors to foreigners, which is almost unprecedented.

After searching for options, Xiao Sun's father discovered that the Union Hospital affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan could perform heart transplantation. However, just as Xiao Sun was preparing to return to China in February 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, disrupting her travel plans.

After extensive coordination, Xiao Sun (小孫) departed on June 12 on a chartered flight back to his home country. As he left the hospital, the director presented him with all the money donated by the medical staff, stating that it was a small gesture of goodwill from everyone. Moved to tears, Xiao Sun expressed, 'I will definitely have the surgery and look forward to visiting everyone in Japan again.'

The Wuhan Union Hospital mentioned in the article is reported to be one of the largest kidney transplant centres in Central and Southern China, as well as a heart transplant centre. The hospital has a significant reputation in organ transplantation, with reports of professors being able to find compatible hearts in a short time frame.

On April 8, 2022, Mu Jiangang (穆建剛), a teacher at Lanzhou University, suffered a myocardial infarction. After being rushed to the hospital, he underwent heart stent surgery, but his condition deteriorated, leading to his readmission on April 28 for an emergency ECMO implantation. It was diagnosed that Mu Jiangang's heart had suffered extensive damage and required a healthy heart transplant.

On May 6, Mu Jiangang was transferred to Wuhan Union Hospital, one of China's leading organ transplant facilities. On that same day, he was officially placed on the waiting list for a heart transplant.

Remarkably, within just 4 days, Wuhan Union Hospital found a compatible heart source, and on May 10, Mu Jiangang received a healthy heart transplant. Following the surgery, he was moved to the intensive care unit, where his pathological indicators returned to normal.

The time from Mu Jiangang being placed on the waiting list to the completion of his heart transplant was only 4 days. In comparison, in the United States, where medical technology is more advanced and the organ donation system is more developed, the waiting time typically exceeds 180 days, with many patients not receiving the opportunity for a heart transplant before they pass away.

Regarding Xiao Sun, the waiting time was even shorter. Reports from mainland Chinese media indicate that Wuhan Union Hospital prepared four compatible heart sources for a patient within ten days in June 2020, ultimately selecting the strong heart of a 33-year-old man. This patient is Xiao Sun, whose full name is Sun Lingling.

The report mentions that after Xiao Sun returned to China on June 12, the first compatible heart source was ready by the 16th. However, after evaluation by the transplant surgeons, it was determined that the coronary artery health of this heart was inadequate, leading to the decision to discard it.

On the 19th, a second compatible heart source was identified, but at that point, Xiao Sun's health had deteriorated, making her unsuitable for the heart transplant surgery, and thus, the second heart source was also abandoned.

By the 25th, Xiao Sun's condition had improved, and Wuhan Union Hospital received two compatible heart sources simultaneously: one from a local female donor and another from a 33-year-old male donor located hundreds of kilometres away. The hospital ultimately opted for the heart from the 33-year-old male donor, citing his stronger health as the reason.

Following the surgery, Xiao Sun survived, and on average, she could receive a suitable heart source for transplantation in less than two days. However, each heart source corresponds to a person's death. This rapid pace has left many countries, including the United States and Japan, feeling inadequate, and the underlying secret is the existence of a vast organ bank controlled by the Chinese Communist government.

On April 4, 2021, the "International Organisation to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong" published an investigative report accusing Wuhan Union Hospital of being involved in the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) organised crimes of live organ harvesting. The report indicated that, in the context of the CCP's national crime of organ harvesting, the hospital is clearly suspected of participating in the live harvesting of organs from groups such as Falun Gong practitioners.

Dr Torsten Trey, Executive Director of the international organisation "Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting" (DAFOH), stated to Dajiyuan that the remarkably short waiting time for donors in the case of Chinese citizen Sun Lingling's heart transplant should alert the international community. Sun Lingling's experience surpassed Dr Trey's expectations, leading him to believe that there is a system in China for on-demand organ harvesting.

While many ordinary people may still harbor doubts, the alarming revelations from the dialogue between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin during the "September 3" military parade—discussing organ transplantation and living to 150 years—have caused many skeptics to reconsider their stance. In the face of such unprecedented evil from the CCP, it is imperative for conscientious individuals to condemn these actions and distance themselves from the malevolence of the CCP. Ignoring this issue ultimately harms oneself, and the rising number of missing youths in contemporary Chinese society is one of the consequences of such indifference.
