Falun Gong Practitioner Li Wenfeng Tortured to Death in Chongqing Women’s Prison

[People News] Minghui.org reported that 64-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Li Wenfeng from Hechuan District, Chongqing City, was tortured to death between February and March this year in Chongqing Women’s Prison.

According to a comprehensive report by The Dajiyuan reporter Li Jiesi, a source said that Li Wenfeng died due to inhuman torture in prison because she refused to be “transformed.” After her death, a criminal inmate manipulated by guards viciously warned Falun Gong practitioners who resisted “transformation” (coercion to renounce their faith): “If you don’t behave, you’ll stand all night like Li Wenfeng and not be allowed to sleep.”

Falun Gong practitioners illegally detained in Chongqing Women’s Prison suffer severe mental and physical torture. Those who refuse “transformation” are deprived of sleep. Some can only sleep 2–3 hours a day, 1 hour, or are not allowed to sleep at all.

At around 2 a.m. on April 19, 2019, 70-year-old Falun Gong practitioner Yang Mingsu collapsed on the floor. On-duty guards ordered inmates to take her to the hospital. Doctors then learned she had been denied sleep.

Practitioners who refuse to be “transformed” are also forbidden from using the toilet. They are forced to defecate and urinate in their pants, forbidden to change, and must wear them dried. The next time they soil their pants, they must again wear them dried. The purpose is to humiliate the practitioners’ dignity, destroy their bodies, and force them to “transform.”

Li Wenfeng, age 54 at her passing, was a retired employee of Chongqing No. 61 Yarn Factory. She began practicing Falun Gong in October 2005. Before that, she had multiple illnesses, the most serious being a lung cyst 11 cm large. Her left lung was unbearably painful and fully festering. At a time of despair, she encountered Falun Gong, and after practicing, all her illnesses disappeared.

Since 2015, after large numbers of Falun Gong practitioners filed lawsuits against Jiang Zemin—the mastermind behind the persecution—Hechuan District’s “610 Office” (an extralegal agency dedicated to persecuting Falun Gong), Public Security Bureau, Domestic Security officers, police stations, and community personnel continued harassing and abducting practitioners.

In March 2016, Li Wenfeng and several other practitioners were abducted and detained in the Hechuan Detention Center. During that time, they were forced to watch videos slandering Falun Gong and were coerced to write “guarantee statements” promising to give up their faith.

On the afternoon of December 29, 2016, Li Wenfeng was again abducted to Hechuan Detention Center for telling people the truth about Falun Gong. Police raided her home, confiscating a 60,000-yuan bankbook, wage booklet, rental contract, and Falun Gong materials. She was later illegally sentenced to 1 year and 6 months, and in 2017 was taken to Chongqing Women’s Prison.

At about 8 a.m. on September 7, 2021, Li Wenfeng was abducted again and taken to the Public Security Bureau. That same day, police ransacked her home, confiscating Falun Gong books, truth-clarifying materials, and other personal items.

The next day she was taken to Hechuan Detention Center and illegally interrogated. Her husband was threatened, told that he had committed “harboring a criminal” and would be imprisoned and lose his pension. Li Wenfeng’s mother became critically ill from the shock. On September 27, her husband signed a “release on bail pending trial” agreement with National Security and Public Security officers, allowing her to return home.

On December 9 that same year, the Hechuan Public Security Bureau notified her husband to bring her to the bureau. They said personnel from the Jiangbei Procuratorate had come and wanted Li Wenfeng to write the “Five Statements” (documents renouncing Falun Gong: guarantee statement, repentance statement, etc.). If she wrote them, she would receive a light sentence and serve it outside prison. Li Wenfeng firmly refused to give up her faith and refused to write the “Five Statements,” thus being forced to leave home.

She originally had a happy family. After she was persecuted, her husband and daughter were also implicated. Her family constantly received harassment calls and were pushed to the limit, eventually beating her and forcing her to sign statements renouncing Falun Gong.

Since August 2021, her entire pension was confiscated. The remaining 3,000 yuan in her salary card was also seized. She was penniless and lived in extreme hardship.

After she left home, relatives and friends searched everywhere but found no trace of her. Everyone was deeply worried. Later, it was learned that she had been tortured to death earlier this year in Chongqing Women’s Prison.

Minghui.org has reported numerous cases exposing the extremely brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in Chongqing Women’s Prison, where practitioners are forced to “transform,” and those who resist suffer inhuman torture.

Huang Zhenglan, a Falun Gong practitioner from Changshou District, Chongqing, was illegally sentenced to four years in August 2017 and taken to Chongqing Women’s Prison, where she suffered torture. After her release, she exposed the persecution methods. The following is a small portion of what she experienced:

Forced Sitting

Guards instructed “cell monitors” (criminal inmates) to force her to sit on a small stool in a fixed posture for more than 20 hours a day. Sitting motionless for so long caused her buttocks to ulcerate, and blood soaked through her clothing.

Forced Standing

Every day she was forced to stand at attention by her bed. If she swayed slightly, the monitors would stomp on her toes. Her feet, calves, and thighs became swollen and painful. Walking and wearing shoes became extremely difficult.

No Washing

In Chongqing’s hot and humid climate, she was forbidden to brush her teeth, wash her face, or bathe for up to a month.

Forced Brainwashing

The prison forced practitioners to read and watch materials slandering Falun Gong for over 18 hours a day. Guard Tang Anzhi forced practitioners to write “thought reports” daily and had cell monitors heavily alter what they wrote.

Starvation

Because she refused to write “thought reports,” Guard Tang Anzhi ordered that her food be reduced. She was given only 0.5 taels of food for lunch and dinner.

No Toilet Use

“610 Office” police forbade Falun Gong practitioners from using the toilet. They were forced to urinate and defecate in their pants. From 9 a.m. to midnight, practitioners were not allowed to use the toilet unless they first cursed Falun Gong.

Freezing

In the freezing winter, practitioners were only allowed to wear two thin shirts and had only a 3-jin thin blanket. The blanket was allowed to cover only the shoulders, leaving the neck and head exposed. Windows were kept open while they slept.
