[People News] In the People's Republic of China, not only are both female and male stars in the entertainment industry frequently victimised by party officials, but there are also numerous celebrities like Yu Menglong who have met untimely and mysterious ends. Additionally, in the sports sector, some prominent athletes are not spared from the grim reality of being molested and coerced by their superiors.
Recently, Wang Li, a champion of the Asian Games and a three-time gold medalist at the Hangzhou Asian Games, publicly accused Fan Jiwen, the head of the Yunnan Songmao Sports Training Base, of molesting female team members, which has sparked significant public interest.
At just 23 years old, Wang Li is an athlete on the canoeing team at the Yunnan Songmao Sports Training Base. In October 2023, she achieved remarkable success by winning three gold medals in the women's 12-person dragon boat 200m, 500m, and 1000m straight races at the Hangzhou Asian Games, making her Yunnan's first three-time Asian Games gold medalist, and she received a prize of 150,000 yuan (RMB) for her achievements.
On the 13th of last month, Wang Li took to social media to release a video in which she publicly reported that Fan Jiwen had demanded the 150,000 yuan competition prize awarded by the state. After she refused, Wang Li faced ongoing retaliatory actions. Recently, she spoke out again, claiming that Fan Jiwen had molested female team members at the Songmao Sports Training Base.
Wang Li also shared relevant screenshots of inappropriate chats, in which a team member messaged her saying, 'This really happened to me, and I hate that time. So since you have come forward, I will also come forward. After all, he has also molested me.'
Another chat record reveals that someone wrote to her: 'He always touches some private parts of girls. He touched under my chest, and at that time I didn't dare to resist and just endured it.'
As public sentiment continued to escalate, on the evening of January 10, 2026, the Yunnan Provincial Sports Bureau released a statement indicating that 'Athlete Wang Mou has reported the director of the Yunnan Songmao Sports Training Base, Fan Moumou, by name,' and the situation is largely accurate. The Yunnan Provincial Sports Bureau has decided to dismiss Fan Moumou from his position. Relevant authorities have initiated an investigation into Fan Moumou. However, the allegations of indecency against Fan Jiwen made by Wang Li were not addressed.
The report of indecency against female team members at the Songmao Sports Training Base recalls the case of tennis doubles world champion Peng Shuai, who accused a former member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault.
On November 2, 2021, Peng Shuai posted a lengthy message on Weibo, stating that three years prior, after his retirement, former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli contacted Dr Liu from the Tianjin Tennis Centre to invite Peng Shuai to play tennis together, with the meeting taking place at the Kangming Building in Beijing (located in the Wangfujing area). After their game, Zhang Gaoli invited Peng Shuai to his home.
'He then took me into his room, just like more than ten years ago in Tianjin, wanting to have sexual relations with me. That afternoon, I was very scared; I never expected it would turn out this way, with someone outside keeping watch, because no one would believe (Zhang Gaoli's) wife would agree.' Peng Shuai stated on Weibo.
Peng Shuai referred to Zhang Gaoli from over a decade ago, when he moved from being the Secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee to the Secretary of the Tianjin Municipal Committee. In 2007, he was elected as a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, and by 2012, Zhang Gaoli had risen to a position on the Standing Committee of the Politburo.
On Weibo, Peng Shuai stated: "Seven years ago, we had a sexual relationship, and after you were promoted to the Standing Committee and moved to Beijing, we lost all contact. I had kept everything buried in my heart, but since you have no intention of taking responsibility, why do you come back to find me, take me to your home, and force me to have sex with you?"
According to Peng Shuai's allegations on Weibo, during the incident at Zhang's home in Beijing, he attempted to rape her while his wife, Kang Jie, stood guard at the door to prevent anyone from interrupting.
Almost five years have passed since the incident, and online reports indicate that Peng Shuai's last public appearance was on February 8, 2022, at the Shougang Ski Jump, where she watched Gu Ailing's women's freestyle skiing big air competition. Zhang Gaoli's last public appearance was in December 2022, at the cremation ceremony for Jiang Zemin. To this day, the Communist Party of China has not responded to Peng Shuai's allegations. If Zhang Gaoli committed rape, he should face legal consequences; if Peng Shuai is spreading falsehoods, she should be punished; if someone has fabricated the report, that person should be held accountable. Yet, the Communist Party has remained silent on this issue, and it remains unclear where Peng Shuai is or whether she is alive or dead.
Currently, the leadership at the Songmao Sports Training Base in Yunnan Province has been accused of sexually harassing female athletes again. This information has surfaced online, and notably, the Communist Party's announcements regarding the punishments do not mention sexual harassment, indicating a sensitivity and reluctance to address the issue.
Indeed, there have been numerous incidents of sexual misconduct among party officials in recent years. If we were to enumerate them, we would find cases of male superiors having affairs with female subordinates, female superiors with male subordinates, female subordinates with male leaders, male subordinates with female leaders, as well as various relationship dynamics such as one-to-many, many-to-one, many-to-many, and one-to-one... If these were to be made public, the party would fear it could jeopardise its power...
However, there is really nothing to fear. From Marx's illegitimate child to Mao Zedong's affairs with married women, and even in his later years with service staff, to Jiang Zemin's flings with young pop stars, the promiscuity of Chinese Communist Party officials has a well-established tradition. Everything is under the party's control, so what is there to fear that could threaten its authority?
Why are party officials particularly drawn to promiscuity? Beyond tradition, they have access to special foods and medications that enhance their vitality, keeping them in excellent health. With both leisure and wealth, if they do not indulge in promiscuity, how can they satisfy their desires? Even if their health declines, they can resort to organ transplants, so what is there to worry about? Furthermore, lacking genuine beliefs, they often feel spiritually empty, and with no constraints on their power, how can they refrain from promiscuity? As long as the Communist Party remains intact, the attractive men and women of China will never know when they might become targets of party officials, much like Yu Menglong, who is unaware of when misfortune and death may befall him.
