U.S. Media Reveals Preparations for the Trump-Xi Meeting: Preventing Poisoning and Avoiding Fights Among Aides

[People News] U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to hold a summit in Beijing from May 14 to 15, marking the first state visit by a U.S. president to China in nearly a decade. The Wall Street Journal reports that hundreds of officials from both the U.S. and China are working intensively to prepare for the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting, ensuring that neither leader makes any verbal missteps, that the itinerary is flawless, and that there is no risk of poisoning.

As distrust between the U.S. and China escalates over trade, technology, and Taiwan issues, every gesture, positioning, and even the length of the red carpet and the placement of the aeroplane stairs could be interpreted as diplomatic signals. While officials from both sides aim for a flawless meeting, the challenge lies in the many potential points of failure. Following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on the 25th, U.S. officials are particularly on edge.

In detail, every aspect must be meticulously planned in advance, from the reception process on the tarmac to the takeover of an entire hotel. Typically, a U.S. president's state visit to China involves dozens of accompanying personnel, with multiple aircraft designated to transport the president, cabinet members, and sometimes even the media.

U.S. Secret Service agents and White House communication specialists will arrive early to inspect the venue, establish a secure area against eavesdropping, and negotiate the number of armed U.S. personnel permitted to operate in China. The U.S. presidential limousine, known as 'The Beast,' a bulletproof luxury vehicle, must also be transported to the destination ahead of schedule, with secure communication equipment arriving shortly thereafter. A medical team will accompany the U.S. president during travel, and Air Force One is equipped with a fully functional surgical suite. Each dish on the menu must be carefully scrutinised, and all ingredients are subject to security checks to mitigate the risk of poisoning.

Simultaneously, a large team of aides is dedicated to ensuring that Trump and Xi Jinping are positioned correctly and speak appropriately, even considering their saliva as state secrets that require stringent protection.

The Wall Street Journal provides an example: in 2023, Xi Jinping attended a luncheon at a secret estate in San Francisco. After the meal, his security personnel swiftly collected the utensils and plates used by Xi Jinping and sprayed them with an unidentified liquid to ensure that any DNA evidence from Xi Jinping would not fall into foreign hands.

At times, the details of incidents can be astonishing. A former U.S. official disclosed a startling fact: during Trump's (Chuanpu) state visit to Beijing in 2017, his security personnel and Xi Jinping's security team engaged in a physical altercation in the hallway of the Great Hall of the People while the two leaders were meeting in an adjacent room. A U.S. diplomat and a Chinese diplomat ultimately intervened to separate the two parties.

Rick Waters, a former U.S. State Department official, played a role in organising Trump’s visit to Beijing in 2017. He commented, 'For those of us involved in the planning, these visits can be quite torturous.' 

The atmosphere at the event is just as crucial as the actual content. Russell, a former senior official at the U.S. State Department who has organised several U.S.-China summits, noted, 'Diplomacy inherently has a dramatic side, but it can have tangible effects. The impression left by leaders during their meetings is often more significant than the official statements.' 

Recent media reports indicate that Trump’s visit to China is expected to last 36 hours. He will arrive on May 14 and hold bilateral talks with Xi Jinping, followed by a visit to the Temple of Heaven on May 15, before departing the same day.
