Numerous videos shared by netizens depict the enormous sand wall rolling in, blocking out sunlight and rapidly consuming the sky and buildings. Some footage shows the air filled with yellow sand, while other clips capture the swirling orange-red dust.

Mainland media reported that on May 25, a strong sandstorm impacted the area near the Wanfo Palace at Flame Mountain in the Gaochang District of Turpan, Xinjiang. The massive sand wall swept in like a tsunami, instantly enveloping buildings in a cloud of yellow sand.

Witness Mr Ka noted that the wind triggered the sandstorm, which lasted for about half an hour. At its peak, visibility was completely obstructed within 10 meters, making it impossible to see anything. While mainland tourists found the experience quite novel, locals were already accustomed to such occurrences. Although windy conditions are common, this particular event is not as frequent.

At 11:47 AM on May 25, the Turpan City Meteorological Station issued a yellow warning signal for sandstorms, predicting that from the afternoon to the night of the 25th, most areas of Turpan City would experience dust-raising or sandstorm conditions, with visibility dropping below 1,000 meters.

On the 26th, staff at the Wanfogong Tourist Centre stated that this was their first experience with such a rare sandstorm, which lasted about ten minutes and turned the sky a yellow or 'egg yolk' colour. During the event, some tourists did not seek shelter; instead, they took out their phones to capture the moment.
