[People News] The credibility of the Party-state government has completely collapsed. Recently, many areas in Guangdong have suffered from severe flooding, and disaster victims are in urgent need of help. However, similar to the floods in Hunan last June, numerous Guangdong netizens have urgently posted videos online saying:
“Brothers and sisters, please don’t donate. Even if you do, the money won’t reach us. Not donating is actually the biggest help you can give us. Use that money to buy yourself some extra pork instead. Thank you in advance.”
A Douyin (TikTok China) user named “Tall Wineglass” put it even more bluntly:
“If you really want to help us, send food, clothes, medicine, and tangible supplies. The reason? You know why!”
A netizen from Guangxi quickly responded:
“We’re afraid even food and clothes won’t reach us — they’ll just get sold off at low prices. During the floods in past years, we only ever got one bottle of disinfectant per year.”
One netizen from Beichuan County — the area hit hardest during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake — shared this bitter experience:
“Back then, just the people of Guangdong alone donated 5 billion yuan. And during post-quake reconstruction, my whole family received only five packs of instant noodles.”
Some even directly tagged the General Secretary:
“The other day, you threw 1.5 billion abroad in Central Asia. Now the disaster victims in Guangdong are paying the price again.”
Looking back at the floods in Hunan in June of last year, many people woke up and stopped donating after hearing the pleas of the victims themselves. So few donations were made that state-run media were forced to publish articles begging the public for money: “Social donations have plummeted, and rescue teams are stretched thin!”
This year, the same refusal to donate is playing out once again in flood-stricken areas of Guangdong. It seems the day of nationwide awakening is truly not far off! △
