Who Holds Power Zhang Youxia s Absence from the Meeting Raises Concerns

[People News] Today, the high-ranking officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) publicly assert the need for unity and absolute political loyalty. However, in reality, they are far from being a cohesive unit. Intense internal power struggles are underway, and under the guise of anti-corruption, officials are ruthlessly battling each other. The Communist Party's governance is teetering on the edge of being besieged from all sides. Consequently, every meeting convened by the CPC garners significant external interest, as observers seek to identify which high-ranking officials have quietly vanished, who remain in their original positions, and which officials' powers have been 'caged'.

On January 20, the CPC authorities held an opening ceremony for a 'special seminar' concerning the 20th Central Committee's Fourth Plenary Session for provincial and ministerial-level officials. Footage from CCTV revealed that several Politburo members were absent from the meeting, including Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, former Xinjiang Secretary Ma Xingrui, Minister of the Organisation Department Shi Taifeng, and Vice Premier He Lifeng. Additionally, Military Commission member and Chief of the Joint Staff Liu Zhenli was also absent.

According to official reports, He Lifeng attended the Davos Forum in Switzerland from January 19 to 22. Meanwhile, Ma Xingrui has missed several important events in succession, with rumours suggesting that he has already fallen from grace. The reasons for the absence of the other three officials remain unclear.

In reality, what concerns the outside world most is not what the party leader has said or what was reported in the news broadcast. The public's focus is on which officials are still in power and which officials wield real authority, as leaders from different factions will steer China in varying developmental directions.

On the overseas social media platform X, many negative reports about Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli have emerged. Some accounts have claimed that "the two vice-chairmen of the Military Commission from the 20th National Congress have successfully convened," sharing a photo of Zhang Youxia alongside the disgraced He Weidong. However, some netizens have commented, "Is Zhang Youxia in trouble? This cannot be verified, but the likelihood is extremely low."

According to The Dajiyuan, current affairs commentator Li Linyi noted that the unexplained absence of Shi Taifeng, Zhang Youxia, and Liu Zhenli is a result of the opaque operations within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the underlying reasons remain to be seen. The absence of high-ranking officials from significant events could either be linked to failures in power struggles or health issues. However, the simultaneous unexplained absence of several individuals is indeed peculiar. Nonetheless, the current political landscape of the CCP is paradoxical, and any scenario is possible.

Earlier, on October 17 of last year, authorities reported the downfall of nine generals, including He Weidong, Miao Hua, and Lin Xiangyang. The communiqué from the 20th Central Committee's Fourth Plenary Session on October 23 confirmed the expulsion of He Weidong, Miao Hua, and others from the CCP. The military newspaper published an article on October 24 discussing military anti-corruption efforts, asserting that investigations into the cases of He Weidong, Miao Hua, and others were underway, emphasising that there should be no refuge for corrupt individuals within the military, and stating that "significant political risks have been effectively mitigated."

Independent commentator Du Zheng previously wrote that the downfall of He Weidong and others was due to internal conflicts with Zhang Youxia; while Zhang Shengmin was promoted to vice-chairman of the Military Commission but did not enter the Politburo, Zhang Youxia became the only Politburo member in the military, effectively consolidating military power and achieving a unique status.

The world is watching to see when the Chinese Communist Party will lift the veil and openly confront the internal and covert power struggles. When that day arrives, it could signal the fragmentation and disintegration of the Chinese Communist Party. △
