[People News] On Thursday (February 12), the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) released a Mandarin-language video on multiple social media platforms including YouTube, X, and Facebook, attempting to recruit Chinese military personnel and persuade them to become CIA informants. The video tells them: “The fate of the world is in your hands.”
According to Voice of America, the short video, titled “The Reason to Stand Up: To Save the Future,” depicts a fictional Chinese male soldier who becomes dissatisfied and frustrated with corruption among the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) senior military leadership, and ultimately contacts the CIA securely through an anonymous messaging system.
The 1-minute-35-second video opens with the soldier entering a military briefing room to attend a report. The narration says: “This is the world I am familiar with—defending the nation and protecting the people. Yet day after day, the truth becomes increasingly clear: what the leaders are truly protecting is only their own personal interests. Their power is built upon countless lies. But now, these walls of lies are gradually collapsing, and in the end, it is left to us to clean up the mess.”
Since coming to power, CCP leader Xi Jinping has launched multiple rounds of anti-corruption campaigns within the military, with senior generals continuously falling from power. The latest example occurred in January 2026, when Zhang Youxia—widely regarded as Xi Jinping’s childhood friend and closest military ally—was purged on charges of “serious violations of discipline and law.” The CCP typically uses this charge to refer to corruption-related offenses. At the time of his downfall, Zhang Youxia was serving as a member of the CCP Politburo and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
After portraying the soldier’s dissatisfaction with military corruption, the video shifts to scenes of his family. The soldier says: “Anyone with leadership ability is bound to be feared and ruthlessly eliminated. I cannot allow these madmen to shape the world my daughter will inherit.”
At the end of the video, the soldier is shown driving away and, inside his car, using a computer to securely contact the CIA through its anonymous messaging system. The voiceover states: “History teaches us that those who win without fighting are the greatest winners. Yet those who have never experienced war are eager to send us into battle. I am a soldier. My duty is to protect the people and defend the nation. Choosing this path is my way of fighting for my family and my country.”
The video concludes with the subtitle: “The fate of the world is in your hands.” It ends with the CIA logo.
Within just two days of its release, as of 1:50 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, the video had surpassed one million views on YouTube.
Since May 2025, the CIA has released three Chinese-language videos. A video released in January this year provided step-by-step instructions on how to safely contact the CIA. Two short Chinese-language films released in May 2025 depicted CCP officials becoming increasingly disillusioned with the CCP regime and seeking a way out for themselves and their families, ultimately choosing to contact the CIA.
Through the new video, the CIA hopes to further recruit credible individuals who understand the true situation in China and are willing to share it. In the video transcript, the CIA once again emphasizes security assurances: “We commend and thank you for your courage. We will thoroughly evaluate the information you submit in order to provide a substantive and effective response, while ensuring your safety.”△
