[People News] The Chinese dubbed version of the feature film “Where Are You”, produced by New Tang Dynasty Television Canada and directed by Kevin Yang, will premiere globally on Gan Jing World on Saturday, July 26. The film has been selected as a featured piece in the "7.20 Falun Gong Anti-Persecution Film Tribute" and will be available for free for a limited time.
Since its release, Where Are You has received critical acclaim at numerous international film festivals and was awarded Best Picture at the 2025 New York International Film Festival. The producers have now launched a Chinese-dubbed version in response to enthusiastic demand from Mandarin-speaking audiences. This marks the first public release of the version on the Gan Jing World platform.
As part of the "7.20 Falun Gong Anti-Persecution Film Tribute", this film commemorates the CCP’s full-scale persecution of Falun Gong, which began in 1999. The event features a selection of films that tell real stories to raise awareness of freedom of belief and expression.
"Where Are You" is inspired by the real-life experiences of renowned Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng and several other attorneys affected by the “709 Crackdown” in China. Through emotional storytelling and a deep concern for social issues, the film explores the internal conflict and moral choices faced by individuals under totalitarian regimes. It takes audiences on a powerful journey across borders in pursuit of truth and justice.
This is New Tang Dynasty Canada’s latest English-language drama following the highly praised “Finding Courage.” Director Kevin Yang emphasized that this is not a biographical reenactment, but rather a realist fiction blending actual events involving lawyer Gao with creative storytelling. The film serves as a tribute to Gao and countless others who have suffered persecution, and it aims to raise international awareness about human rights conditions in China.
Screenwriter Stella Wu said she was deeply moved when she first heard Gao’s story over a decade ago. “To speak out for the innocent while fully aware of the risks of suppression or disappearance — that’s not heroism, it’s a moral choice,” she said. Wu noted that her inspiration partly came from public footage and reports about Gao’s family, “The quiet endurance and unspoken pain were unforgettable.”
The story follows Lucy, a Chinese-Canadian woman, who embarks on a difficult quest to find her husband Gao Li, who has been secretly detained and disappeared by the Chinese government. The film weaves together past and present, portraying the collision of love and belief under authoritarian rule and highlighting the light of humanity in the face of fear. The stark contrast between Canada’s bright natural light and the cold, oppressive colour tones used in scenes set in China underscores the tension between freedom and totalitarianism.
Joanne Szilagyi, who plays Lucy, gives a subtle and layered performance, embodying a woman who holds onto hope despite despair. Guangyu Jiang, who portrays Gao Li, conveys deep emotion as a principled lawyer. During one intense torture scene, he insisted on filming for hours on a cold cement floor, showing remarkable dedication. Director Kevin Yang recalled, “There were times on set when the crew was in tears — everyone was deeply moved by the story and characters.”
Additionally, Cecilia Xiong plays a journalist whose transformation from avoidance to confronting the truth is portrayed with nuance, while young actress Kiki delivers several emotionally charged scenes that serve as the film’s most heart-wrenching moments.
Director Yang said, “I hope this film not only raises public awareness about human rights but also inspires people to hold onto inner kindness and righteousness when facing oppression.” He emphasized that even in the darkest times, the light within humanity still shines — “and that is our greatest treasure.”
