How Many People Has the Yu Menglong Case Awakened

[People News] On September 11, news suddenly broke of the death of 37-year-old mainland Chinese actor Yu Menglong. Strangely, his long-dissolved studio released a statement the same day claiming he fell to his death, and that “police ruled out criminal suspicion.” However, Yu Menglong’s inexplicable death ignited the anger of countless Chinese. Overwhelmingly, netizens voiced the same opinion: Yu Menglong was murdered, and they pointed out numerous suspicious details.

So far, different versions and both real and fake videos have circulated online about Yu Menglong’s death. Some say he was thrown from a building, others say he was cut open. Regardless of the account, the descriptions of his death are tragic. The causes are also debated, leaving the truth shrouded in mystery. This has only made netizens question the truth more loudly.

Compared with the relentless doubts on social media and the surging public outcry, what is even stranger is the silence: the silence of those involved, the silence of entertainment industry tycoons, the silence of CCP police, the silence of Yu Menglong’s family, and the subdued tone of mainland media. Why is this?

According to online information, there were 17 people at the drinking party that day, including directors, screenwriters, actors, Yu’s agent and assistant, as well as big capital investors. It is said that one of the directors, Xin Qi, has high-level CCP connections. As people who knew the truth about Yu Menglong’s death, after the incident they either kept silent, publicly denied being present, fled abroad, or shut down their social media accounts. Meanwhile, top entertainment figures such as Chen Daoming, chairman of the China Film Association, also remained tight-lipped. What are they afraid of?

The CCP police, after “ruling out criminal suspicion” through the studio at the very beginning, have refused to give any official explanation for more than ten days, despite the public’s repeated calls. Not even a statement that an investigation is ongoing. The question is: who has the power to prevent the police from investigating and issuing a statement?

Likewise, concerning the death of a celebrity with 20 million fans—a case that has drawn widespread suspicion—mainland media have published only a pitiful few reports, with no in-depth investigations. Who gave the order for such low-key coverage? And who deleted related posts on Xiaohongshu, Douyin, and Weibo?

As for Yu Menglong’s mother’s silence, this is even more worrying. Few believe the statement released through the dissolved studio in her name is real. People fear she has been threatened and silenced, just like so many grieving families in past wrongful cases. What power is at work behind this?

If not for powerful forces behind the scenes, why all this silence? Evidence that “the water runs deep” includes two more points: first, Hong Kong producer Xiang Tai said during a livestream that she was powerless regarding Yu Menglong’s case.

Second, a retired military blogger with 70,000 followers, nicknamed “Lin Beichuan,” who is a “second-generation Red,” had been speaking out for Yu Menglong in recent days. He was threatened, forced on September 18 to delete all related posts, and declared that his words represented only himself, not his relatives or friends. In the early morning of September 19, he revealed he had been “called back to Beijing” from Hong Kong, and his phone was confiscated. After that, he disappeared entirely, and his Weibo comment section was forcibly shut down.

Based on the CCP’s past cover-ups of many incidents, the so-called “deep water” simply means the case touches on the interests of people with powerful CCP backgrounds. If the truth were revealed, not only would all those involved face justice, but their backers would also be affected, possibly endangering the CCP’s already shaky regime. Thus, to protect the interests of the powerful and maintain CCP rule, the truth of the Yu Menglong case will very likely never be revealed. Just like the Lei Yang case, the Tangshan barbecue restaurant beating case, and the Xuzhou chained woman case, it will be buried with time—unless one day the CCP collapses, when the truth might finally emerge.

While the CCP deliberately covers up the truth, it must also pay the price of more people awakening. Many netizens commented that they were not fans of Yu Menglong, but they spoke out because they felt it was unfair.

Others wrote: “Yu Menglong is just like the children who come from thousands of ordinary families. Everyone is scared. All of today’s voices are so that if one day disaster befalls us, someone else will also speak up,” “The people must demand justice, even if only for their children,” “If even a public figure can die so inexplicably, then ordinary Chinese people are even more like ants, who could die violently at any moment”...

Indeed, many people who once lived contentedly and never spoke out against suffering are, through the death of a supposedly apolitical actor, truly realizing how dark this society is and how little the CCP cares for public opinion. Yu Menglong’s death pierced their self-delusion and forced them, to varying degrees, to think about who has created such a terrifying society. The awakening of more and more people will continue to shake the CCP’s already tilted foundations until it collapses—something history has proven time and again.
