[People News] A well-known Japanese restaurant, "Yinping," located on the 3rd floor of the Shanghai Global Financial Centre, was the site of a shocking random stabbing incident on the 19th during the peak lunch hour. A 59-year-old man named Yang suddenly entered the restaurant, wielding a knife and began attacking patrons indiscriminately, injuring two Japanese men and one Chinese woman. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Kajiyama stated on the 20th that he has strongly urged the Chinese authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and to take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Violence During Peak Lunch Hour
According to reports from Sanli News, this terrifying stabbing incident took place at 12:25 PM on the 19th. At that time, the restaurant was bustling with diners when the suspect, Yang, suddenly entered with a sharp weapon and began his random assault. The Shanghai police received the emergency call and quickly arrived at the scene, where they subdued and arrested Yang. Preliminary investigations revealed that Yang was incoherent and displayed unusual behaviour at the time of his arrest, and he has a history of mental health issues. The exact motive behind the attack is still under investigation. Fortunately, after receiving emergency medical treatment, all three injured individuals are currently in stable condition and not facing life-threatening injuries.
"That was the most intense fear I have ever felt in my life!" A Japanese witness, who was recently assigned to Shanghai in April, recounted the terrifying moment of the incident, still feeling the aftershocks. He explained that he was dining with colleagues in a private room when suddenly, piercing screams and the loud crash of objects echoed from outside. Everyone peered through the glass at the bottom of the paper door and was shocked to see the thin-framed suspect, Yang (Yáng), blocking the entrance, looking extremely agitated and constantly shaking his legs.

To protect themselves, the people inside the private room had no choice but to use all their strength to hold down the paper door and retreat behind the table in fear, terrified that the suspect would break in. The witness noted that the building's security guard then intervened with a riot fork to subdue the suspect, who offered little resistance when apprehended. As he nervously stepped outside, he was shocked to find that one of the Japanese victims was a familiar friend, slumped against the wall, clutching his abdomen with both hands and bleeding profusely. The sight was heart-wrenching, but fortunately, the friend was still somewhat conscious and managed to nod slightly in acknowledgement.
The building involved is a hub for Japanese enterprises.
According to Japanese media, the building where the incident took place, the "Global Financial Centre," is one of Shanghai's iconic skyscrapers. Developed by the well-known Japanese real estate company Mori Building Co., Ltd., the building hosts a significant number of Japanese companies, including several leading Japanese financial institutions and general trading companies such as Mizuho Bank and Mitsui & Co.
On May 20, the headquarters of Japan's Mori Building Company held a press conference in Tokyo, confirming that the two injured Japanese adult males involved in this incident were employees stationed in Shanghai, one of whom is a senior executive in management.
The incident took place at the third-floor "Yinping" Japanese restaurant, a renowned Kansai-style establishment in Shanghai, which serves as a central hub for Japanese executives and employees in the surrounding business district for business banquets and lunches.
In recent years, there has been a surge in attacks on Japanese individuals in mainland China.
On June 24, 2024, a knife attack occurred at the Xindi Centre bus stop on Tayuan Road in the High-tech Zone of Suzhou, where a Japanese mother and son were injured by a Chinese man wielding a knife while waiting for a school bus. The suspect later attempted to board a bus for a Japanese expatriate school, but was bravely stopped by a Chinese female worker, Hu Youping, who was stabbed multiple times and died despite rescue efforts.
On September 18, 2024, a primary school student attending a Japanese school in Shenzhen was stabbed by a passerby on his way to school and later succumbed to his injuries. The victim, a 10-year-old boy surnamed Shen, was of mixed Chinese and Japanese descent and was attacked in front of his mother, suffering multiple stab wounds to his abdomen and thigh. The incident caused a sensation in both China and Japan, leading to a diplomatic uproar. The then Prime Minister of Japan condemned the perpetrator's actions as extremely despicable, while the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the incident, emphasising that it was an "isolated case."
Analysts suggest that the series of attacks on Japanese citizens from Suzhou to Shenzhen and now Shanghai is far from coincidental. This highlights that the Chinese government's long-standing tolerance of, and even deliberate incitement of, extreme anti-Japanese nationalist narratives has spiralled into an uncontrollable abyss of "populist backlash."
The Chinese Communist Party initially sought to use anti-Japanese populism as a pressure relief valve to alleviate domestic economic downturns. However, it did not anticipate that this monstrous beast would ultimately turn against them. The violent incident at a key financial landmark in Shanghai has completely shattered the last remnants of confidence that Japanese investors had in China's business environment. This group of 'patriotic rioters,' cultivated by the authorities themselves, is ruthlessly accelerating the destruction of the Chinese Communist Party's remaining international credibility and the dwindling foreign investment opportunities. △
