Zheng Liwen (People News)
[People News] On the morning of April 8th in Nanjing, Kuomintang Chairman Zheng Liwen climbed the 392 steps of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Standing before the statue of Sun Yat-sen, she delivered a performance filled with emotion. In her 18-minute speech, her voice trembled, and her eyes glistened with tears, clearly showing her heartfelt feelings.
During her speech, Zheng Liwen highlighted that Sun Yat-sen established Asia's first democratic republic—the Republic of China—and referenced the '1992 Consensus.' Notably, she mentioned Japan 11 times. Why does she focus so intently on Japan? This reflects Chairman Zheng's strategic thinking. With tears and emotion, she recounted the hardships Taiwan endured under Japanese colonial rule, framing the shared pain of both sides of the Taiwan Strait around the theme of 'anti-Japanese' sentiment. Her message was straightforward: as long as we all share a disdain for Japan, we are united as one family.
Yet, what was most surprising was not her focus on Japan, but her ability to politicise 'tree planting' as an act of loyalty. She passionately stated: 'Mr. Sun had a lifelong love for nature, valued ecology, and encouraged tree planting.' While this statement holds truth, she quickly pivoted to make a pointed remark directed at Beijing, saying: 'General Secretary Xi Jinping also places great importance on ecological conservation and advocates for tree planting every year.'
This exemplifies Chairman Zheng's style of communication.' She forcefully connected Sun Yat-sen with General Secretary Xi, using 'tree planting' to awkwardly assert that 'the two sides of the strait are one family.' Is this truly a tribute to the Father of the Nation? Clearly, it serves as a means to pave the way for a meeting with Xi Jinping!
However, after this 'historical tragedy' combined with the 'tree planting flattery show' was performed, the outcome did not unfold as she had anticipated.
Having just emerged from the solemn and poignant atmosphere of Zhongshan Ling, Zheng Liwen turned to enter the reception room of Jiangsu Provincial Party Secretary Xin Changxing. She may still have been lost in the 18 minutes of self-reflection she had just experienced, but as soon as Xin Changxing spoke, he yanked her back from the realm of history to the harshness of reality.
With a smile, Xin Changxing looked at her and unexpectedly remarked, "Since you took office, I’ve watched quite a few of your videos..." This comment immediately drained the colour from Zheng Liwen's face.
Everyone should take note: in that split second, Zheng Liwen's expression was nothing short of remarkable. Initially maintaining the demeanour of a 'Party Chair', she visibly 'shocked' for a moment; her stunned reaction was a hundred times more authentic than her earlier tears at Zhongshan Ling.
Why was this statement so powerful? Because what Zheng Liwen fears most is having her past scrutinised. Xin Changxing's words, while seemingly polite, were actually a reminder: "Stop pretending; I have every word you've said online and every phase of your appearance stored on my hard drive."
Thus, during Zheng Liwen's visit to Nanjing, just a second earlier, she was performing a 'historical drama' at Zhongshan Ling, attempting to gain recognition by mentioning Japan 11 times; in the next moment, she was acting out a 'panic story' in front of the Provincial Party Secretary, intimidated into silence by the surveillance of big data.
This encapsulates the most ironic aspect of cross-strait exchanges today: you wish to use history as a shield, while others wield your videos as a mirror to reveal your true self. Tears may fool the camera, but when faced with the statement 'I have watched your videos', no matter how skilled the performance, it is likely to send a shiver down your spine.
Nonetheless, Zheng Liwen's performance has garnered appreciation from Zhu Fenglian, the spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Zheng-Xi meeting is scheduled for April 10. We look forward to seeing how Zheng Liwen will perform on this significant occasion on the 10th.
